Local SEO checklist for small businesses in India
A practical local SEO checklist for Indian small businesses: Google Business Profile, consistent contact details, genuine reviews, city pages and tracking.

Local SEO helps nearby customers find you when they search for what you offer, on Google Search and Google Maps. For most small businesses it comes down to four things: an accurate and complete Google Business Profile, consistent contact details everywhere, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and a website that clearly explains what you do and where.
1. Set up your Google Business Profile properly
- Check eligibility. Google requires a real location customers can visit, or a business that travels to customers. A rented mailing address or virtual office is not eligible.
- If you visit customers rather than receive them, set up a service area and hide your address, as Google's guidelines recommend.
- Use your real business name only. Google does not allow extra keywords, locations or taglines in the name.
- Choose the most specific primary category and as few additional categories as accurately describe your business.
- Complete hours, phone number, website, services and a description written for customers.
- Add real photos of your premises, team and work, and keep them up to date.
- Post updates, offers and events regularly so the profile shows an active business.
2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories such as JustDial, IndiaMART and Sulekha. Mismatched details confuse customers and make it harder for search engines to trust your information. When you move or change numbers, update every listing.
3. Earn genuine reviews and reply to them
- Ask every genuine customer for a review, for example with a short link after delivery or a completed service.
- Never pay or offer discounts for reviews, and never ask only happy customers. Google's policy treats both as fake engagement.
- Reply to every review, thank people for positive ones and respond calmly and helpfully to complaints.
- Use recurring complaints as feedback to fix the underlying problem.
4. Make your website locally relevant
- Create a clear page for each main service, explaining who it is for and how to enquire.
- Add location pages only for places you genuinely serve, each with useful, specific content rather than the same text with a different city name.
- Show your address, phone and hours on your contact page, with an embedded map.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data that matches your Google Business Profile.
- Make sure pages load fast on mobile and offer tap-to-call and WhatsApp.
5. Build local mentions
Join relevant local chambers of commerce and industry associations, take part in local events, and share useful expertise with local publications. Mentions from real local organisations help customers and search engines see that your business is established in the area.
6. Measure what matters
- Google Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests and website clicks.
- Google Search Console: searches that include your city or 'near me', and the pages they lead to.
- Enquiries by source: ask new customers how they found you and record it in your CRM.
